Allergic to Home.

Most of you know I have severe allergies during the summer months. I have since moving here 5 years ago. And every year I put off doing anything significant about it because I was either pregnant, nursing, or just counting down the days till the season was over. Well after my worst season so far I finally decided to do something about. That and the fact my husband heard an add for an Allergy & Asthsma Specialist.

So today was my day for testing. There were a few things I knew I was allergic too, but in no way did I expect to be allergic to everything!!! All Weeds, All Trees, All Grasses. HELLO!!!!! Move this girl to the Arctic!!! Okay, the "silver lining" I am not allergic to dusts, molds or my puppy!

I am allergic to:

  • my two sweet kitties.

  • the vast field behind my house that my kids, cats and pup play in all day.

  • the grass I roll around on with my kids.

  • the weeds i havent pulled up this year in my flower beds.

  • the crops my dear friends make their living off of.

Pretty much I am allergic to my town or geographic region I call home. So my options are:

  • Moving. (not going to happen)

  • Suffer and medicate every summer with drugs that dont seem to ever work

  • Or start the long process of Allergy shots! (a 5 year process)

So there you have it, for a few months I will travel every week 40 miles for two shots. Ouch! Then every two weeks, then every 3, and then once a month. But hopefully this process will help improve the quality of life I have every July through September. Holy Cow what is this going to cost?!!!

(my spell check isnt working so deal with the errors!)

Join the club... I too am allergic to grass, trees, weeds... and a few other things!
... good luck with the shots... I've done them, quit, started again, quit, and hopefully next summer will find something that really works.
I'm getting some honey and the comb tomorrow from a local bee keeper... several people have told me to eat a chunk of that every day(has to be local) and it does wonders within a couple of weeks.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Ugh! I'm sorry to hear that, Shan!

PS: it was fun to see you Saturday, and we'll see you this Saturday, too!

Oh my oh my! Well now you know exactly why you have been so miserable.
Hopefully the shots will work and good thing the summer is almost over!

O.K... so I typed this big long comment, and then my battery went dead and I lost it all. So... sorry you still feel like crap, and hope the shots work for you. I have heard about the bee honey thing "beeing" quite successful in helping people, as long as they are local bees. You will have to let me know how the shot thing goes.

I feel so bad for you! We give allergy shots at our office all the time and they seem to work...and I have been told they dont hurt either! The drive might get old though! I hope it goes well for you and that you are feeling better soon!

Sorry you feel so bad and that there are so many shots in your future! I hope they will help!

I never had allegies until I moved this way either. I am sorry that yours are so bad, I too have heard about the local honey working... or helping anyway, but have never tried it. Good luck and hope you start feeling better soon!

My mom used to do the shots for her allergies. Have you tried Dr.Smith?? (I know he's a chiropractor but he works with allergies too!) She goes to him every so often and hardly suffers at all now!

Ditto, I just suffer with it. It sucks!

Well at least you have your answer.
If the shots work they can teach you to give them to yourself eventually. I will pray that it works well for you, eating the honey thing would be more torture for me than the shots.
Love, Mom

Did you see Dr. Vatsia? Jason did that years ago... and if I remember right he was able to start getting the shots she prescribed via Dr. Flaiz's office. Then... he bailed on the whole shot thing and self-medicates between Dr. Smith (aka Voodoo Dr.- that's for you Mike) and popping pills. Totally sucks. Sorry.

So did the shots help or are people bailing because it wasn't working and it wasn't worth the time? My guess is that the 5 year committment is very hard to stick to...both Lindsay and Jason gave up and went a different route.

Honestly, the commitment was the difficult part for me.... and I didn't really notice a difference, but that might have been simply because I didn't stick with it. Between living way out of town, being pregnant, and trying to work it into my schedule every week I just couldn't make it work. I've heard great things about Dr. Smith and I also think the honey thing is worth a try (definitely not as expensive).
So - today, I'm off to get honey.
The key is STICKING WITH IT... and I haven't done so well with that...
Good luck Shan - with whatever you do... and I'll pray you have better luck than some of us :)

Danny has been geting allergy shots at Dr. Richard Flaiz's office - weekly - for the last two years and this year has been MUCH better. Maybe they could do the shots for you so you wouldn't have to travel???
